The Antioch Synopsis - s/t /// California Super Post

Northern California has enjoyed a fairly rich metal and hardcore scene in recent years, with an especially large number of bands emerging in the early 2000's. As those bands dissolved, many of their former members inevitably formed other various projects, and if I wasn't so lazy I would've made some tree chart illustrating this, but the point is these bands have very few degrees of separation. So, I'll just try to elaborate in the least painful way possible:

With Passion was a tech death band which eventually consisted of 4/5th's of Conducting From the Grave, and at one point bassist Michael Nordeen (who joined The Human Abstract).

Conducting From the Grave also featured vocalist Drew Winter, who joined Fate/Shadow of the Colossus (which also features drummer Jacob Durrett, who joined Molotov Solution), and guitarist John Abernathy, who is also in Soma Ras.

Finally, the vocalist of Soma Ras was the vocalist of The Antioch Synopsis, which was the original reason for this post.

This isn't the only example, as Alterbeast and The Kennedy Veil share the same drummer, Gabe Seeber, who also plays with Decrepit Birth, which at some point had 3 members of Odious Mortem as well as Chase Fraser, who also played in Animosity, Son of Aurelius, and The Taste of Blood, which featured vocalist Derek Rydquist, who went on to be the vocalist of The Faceless. Whew. 7 Degrees of Kevin Bacon, anyone?

(^ I still love this video almost 10 years later, scene hair and all)

Anyway, enjoy The Antioch Synopsis' eponymous full-length, which seemed to just get lost in the shuffle of so many other similar releases last year.

Vermin Womb - Permanence

Following the demise of Denver's Clinging to the Trees of a Forest Fire, deathgrind heavyweight Ethan McCarthy (also of Primitive Man), has formed another project, Vermin Womb. McCarthy's vocals are monstrous, and his guitar work is perfectly suited for the genre. The band lives up to the name, as their sound is truly filthy.

Plague Widow - This Black Earth

Not exactly recent news, but my friends in Plague Widow not only released an EP back in September, they've also signed with Willowtip Records. The band definitely deserves the recognition, as guitarist and graphic artist Hal Rotter (Rotting Graphics) has been involved with a number of other underground bands in the California death metal/grind scene, must notably Slaughterbox, and as of late they've been gaining a significant following. Plague Widow plays some pretty irresistible blackened deathgrind, so if you have a pulse and like extreme music, you'll probably enjoy this.

You can expect their debut full-length sometime next year.

Pig Destroyer - The Diplomat

'Cause it's awesome, dammit. Love the Kubrickesque imagery.

"Book Burner" is definitely one of my favorite releases of 2012 so far, and I've got it on repeat.

Defeated Sanity - Passages Into Deformity trailer

Defeated Sanity has released a teaser for their upcoming album, "Passages Into Deformity," which is slated for a May 2013 release, and so far it's sounding pretty nasty. Although they've undergone numerous lineup changes, the original spirit of their sound seems to have been retained, despite the death of guitarist and founding member, Wolfgang Teske. Lille Gruber, Teske's son and drummer, is the other founding member, making this the ultimate death metal family band. Not to mention the past involvement of other current notable musicians like Christian Muenzner of Necrophagist and Obscura, and AJ Magna of Disgorge.

Archspire - Plague of Am

I've been meaning to post this Archspire rehearsal footage for days now. Fans of OriginBeneath the Massacre, Spawn of Possesion, and Viraemia rejoice, enough blasts and sweeps to satisfy any tech-death fan.

Archspire also has an EP, "All Shall Allign," which is available from Trendkill Recordings.

Smaragos - EP

Santa Cruz knows death metal, and Smaragos is certainly no exception. Featuring 2 members of Son of Auerlius, vocalist Riley McShane and bassist Max Zigman (who also did guitar/programming), the release ranges from blistering tech-death/grind to eastern sounding stuff; at one point a sitar is even employed. It's immediately clear they have a wide range of influences they seek to combine effectively, which is an aesthetic I enthusiastically embrace.

My only gripe is the EP is too short, and I'm left wanting more. Clocking in at just over 11 minutes, they seem to be following a grind template, length wise, but hopefully a future release is planned because I'd like to see this become a more serious project.

Plague Widow / Oblivionized - Split 7" Teasers

Plague Widow have released a short teaser video featuring some new songs off their upcoming split with UK grind act, Oblivionized. No official release date has been slated, but both bands are clearly well in the midst of writing and recording, with Plague Widow again returning to Sacramento's own Mayhemeness Recording.

Pig Destroyer - Burning Palm

Pig Destroyer has just released a new song (complete with unfortunate lyric video) from their upcoming album, "Book Burner," which drops October 22nd.

Murder Construct - Results

Featuring Travis Ryan (Cattle Decapitation), Leon del Muerte (Exhumed, ex-Intronaut, ex-Impaled, ex-Phobia), Danny Walker (Intronaut, Exhumed, ex-Jesu), and Caleb Schneider (Bad Acid Trip). Obviously not a release to miss, given the all-star lineup and Ryan's infamous vocal styling.

The album is available now on Bandcamp.

Priapus - Airloom

Air Loom cover art

Some of you may remember Priapus from their split with Old Painless (which you can find here), and they play some extremely nasty deathgrind.

Mulletcorpse - Disinfect

Silly name, but some really sick deathgrind. Featuring ex-members of Terrorhorse. Best of all, Mulletcorpse offers their album free.

Spawn of Possession - Bodiless Sleeper

Another new track from the wizards of tech-death.

Plague Widow - EP

At long last, Plague Widow has finally dropped their much anticipated, debut eponymous EP. Recorded by Bob Swanson of Mayhemeness Studios (Journal, Fate/Shadow of the Colossus, Rings of Saturn, Slaughterbox), this EP should satisfy one's craving for new brutal death-grind. I found "Mabus Incarnate" particularly satisfying.

Arkaik - Skingraft Hieroglyphics

Apparently I'm on a technical death metal kick right now. Enjoy the new Arkaik pre-production track, whose guitarist Craig Peters recently joined the legendary Deeds of Flesh.

Spawn of Possession - Where Angels Go Demons Follow

Once again, not really news from the underground, but still extremely exciting. One of the best bands in technical death metal.

Plague Widow - Operating the Segmental Apparatus

Plague Widow has just released another new track, and the excitement for the release of their EP is building. I wonder if the track name could possibly be a slight nod to The Apparatus message board (whose namesake is Florida legends Bodies in the Gears of the Apparatus)...
